For this reason, Italy was continuously traveled by pilgrims from all over Europe. Many stopped in Rome, the others went down along the peninsula to the port of Brindisi and from there they embarked for the Holy Land. Pilgrims coming mainly from the land of the Franks, in the post-Carolingian age began to cross the Alps and enter Italy.
